As you can see here, I have taken 2 X4's and built beds that are 8 X 4.  I have 2 stacked, with a cardboard bottom, and compost on top.

Well, this week I added another frame to the top.  This way, when I fill it with compost, it will be a much bigger bed.  I am thinking about putting strawberries in here...maybe.  That is the thing about the 'off' season, I end up dreaming about this wonderful garden, all lush and overgrown.  In reality...not the thriving wonderment I see in my head.  But I will never give up hope...that THIS is the year I will be struggling to use up and sell my handy work.

As for the rest of my garden...it looks pretty bad.  I had a blow-out on one  of my gates (Trouble Dog ran right through it) so the rabbits have been having their way with my cabbage, kale, broccoli, all of it.

So...yesterday I spent several hours fixing all the spots they can get in by putting a 1/2 inch opening, plastic fence up, just around the bottom.  I also adjusted the gate the dogs broke by cutting an inch off the width so the wiring would fit better.

By bedtime I hurt all over and was afraid I might hurt today, too.  But I am OK!

So...my next project for this garden is to fill the beds with compost and top them off with wood chips.  I was looking up the places to get compost on the internet today.  There are now 11 places in  So. California where you can go get it for free, as much as you can haul away.  Go to smartgardenning.com, to the FACTS list.  It is a PDF file.

I hope to cover my whole acre in compost at least 6 inches deep.  But I will start with my gardens.  Then the tree beds.  I want to plant melons, and squash in the tree beds  It will keep the soil moist around the trees and I can grow the vines up the trees for support.  Plus, it will be easy to put a ring of fence around the bottom to keep the rabbits out.

This is what the rabbits have done to my red cabbage.

I DECLARE WAR ON RABBITS!
