NUT HATCH GRASS 02/23/2010
This is Nuthatch Grass. It is a weed that is very hard to get rid of. We have a couple small patches...this one is by my "circle". It Looks like small onions, or maybe some bulbs coming up. I guess digging them up is about the best way of getting rid of it. I was reading some posts that said it took roundup a couple of weeks...but it came back. BFF 02/05/2010
This week, I received a call from BFF. She was calling to "make a date" for my BD. It is becoming a "tradition" to go get a pedicure (whether I need one or not), eat (or drink) lunch, and go see a movie. She is so kind and generous. We have such a good time together. We laugh...hard...most of the day. Sometimes I think she has more fun than me. Or at least she is trying to. Love ya Gal! Hope we get another 31 years. When they say you can't pick your family, that is not entirely true. Because She is DEFINITELY My family. Motivation 01/22/2010
On My Soap Box, I brought up goat heads. It reminded me of a time when The Lad was The Boy. Wearing diapers. He poked a hole in the back of his diaper. I had just put it on and they are very expensive so I thought I'd just leave it cause it was in the back and he might not notice. Shortly thereafter, he came up to me , pointed at his nose and went "Uhn, uhn". When I looked up his nose there was wadded up diaper stuck up there. He must have rolled it in little balls and used his little finger to cram them deep in his nostril. The only thing I could think of was to get that blue/green bulb to suck snot out of his nose the DR gives you when they come home from the hospital when they are born. When he saw me coming with that thing, he started to run and cry. Thinking I might have to take him to the emergency room if I couldn't get it out scared me. So I pinned him down and put him in a headlock. All the time he is screaming and thrashing around, crying. I got out three balls of diaper. Looking up his nose with a flashlight, it seemed I had got it all. I put him in his highchair and gave him a Popsicle to calm him down. While he was in the chair, he sneezed, and again pointed to his nose, going "Uhn, uhn." There were two more balls stuck up there. This time he held his head back and let me use the nasal aspirator on him, thinking he might get another Popsicle. For a long time after that, he stuck all kinds of things up his nose...rocks, peas, macaroni. I was forever picking things out of there. Needless to say, I became weary of his antics. I threatened to punish him...he wasn't buying that. One day he came to me, pointing at his nose, "Uhn, uhn." "What did you put up there now, Boy?" as I pinched his nose. He let out a scream, and snorted real hard! Out came a goat head. THAT was the LAST time he put anything up his nose. Pain is a great motivator. THE OFFICE 01/18/2010
After The Lad and I went to the farmers market, we stopped by the "New" office. He wanted to show me how they fixed things up since they got the desks and chairs and stuff in there. They had spent most of Saturday cleaning up the desks, moving things around and shopping for chairs and office supplies. He kept saying how much he hurt....(he's not used to doing all that physical labor). They have desks on both sides and everyone gets their own desk. The Lad's is close to the cooler vent. I just was checking if I told you or not, but I would say no....but when the Lad and all were looking for an office to rent they checked out several places. When they got to this office, The Lad said..."this place reminds me of my Dad". When he took me to see the office for the first time I told him..." you know your Dad used to work here in this building." So I guess his Dad is looking out for him....Thanks! COME ON SPRING... 01/07/2010
I am hoping to get things ready for my garden soon. I have been making plans for watering with PVC pipes this year. Automatically...I hope. Also...I have been counting beds and what to put in them. I will soon be showing how to make starter pots out of newspaper. It makes transplanting so much safer for the new shoots. Plus worms love newspaper. Worms are free fertilizer. This is a "happening" we want to encourage. I would like to get my friend down the street to help me with the care of the seedlings. He has had better luck with that than me. I do better with what I can plant straight in the ground. Come on spring! I always look forward to when I can get out and put a full day in the yard. I remember the Lad's Dad would come home this time of year and pout as he stood at the slider door...that it was dark when he got home. I feel that way too. Plus I like it to be warm, or warmer to work outside and NO wind. Maybe later today I can get some stuff done out there. So till things get different... COME ON SPRING! Baking and Canning 12/23/2009
I have been busy for weeks baking and canning. Yesterday I made 16 loaves of bread, and my banana nut bread butter. The butter stuff turned out most excellent! The recipe calls for walnuts and I put in walnuts, pecans and raisins. It calls for minuscule amounts of cinnamon and nutmeg...that just won't do! I have 4 apple pies to bake today and 1...maybe 2 batches of cinnamon rolls. That would be 14 big round pans. My neighbors always mention the rolls when we talk. I am sure they like it when I share them. Then I get to play. The Lad wants to take me to see AVATAR in 3-D. What a Lucky Mom I am. He is such a blessing! The contest! 12/14/2009
This contest was so sad. Only one person commented and they sad they didn't want the prize.....what's up with that? What can I say. It is just a little funny. I guess I need a bigger prize or maybe a better one. It is OK though. Maybe I will go use it myself....since it was my Christmas gift. On to another subject. I have been helping out my Buddy who had surgery. This week I take her Son back and forth to school and help around the house a little. She seems to be doing a little better but it is going to be a while before she is 100 percent. I was hoping she would take a nap today...but it didn't happen. I decided that I would feed her livestock this afternoon so her Hubby doesn't have to when he gets home in the dark. I just keep thinking there were times when I was younger and sick and needed help and didn't get it. Wishing someone could do things without being asked. I wondered "can't they see what needs to be done?" So I ask if there is anything she would like for me to do. You don't know what little thing has been bothering them that would make them feel better if you just did it. So...if you have someone who needs help....ask what you can do. If they say "nothing", and you can see that the dishes need washing or the trash needs taking out....just do it. It only takes a moment and would make the world of difference to someone who feels helpless. CONTESTS 12/11/2009
Today I would like to hold my first contest. I have been thinking about this for some time now and am having a hard time making a decision. What to do for a contest? How long to hold it for? How often to have contests? Sometimes I get lost in the details. So I decided to have one and just "wing" it. I can make some rules later. So today I would like to give away a gift certificate I got last year for Christmas from Jones. $25.00 from Red Lobster. I will close the contest Monday the 14th...my day...and take the middle number. So please leave a comment and answer the question, only once. "What do you do to be green?" Fleeting Snow 12/09/2009
As you can see...it snowed here....just a little. If I hadn't taken this picture, it may have gone unnoticed. I went out to feed the dogs and it was sort of misty, but not raining. After about 15 minutes, I opened the door to let them back in and saw this. Before The Lad got home, it had melted. I would say that was about 40 minutes. A little teaser snow. THIS kind of snow I can deal with. I just know that most people who live in CA think of snow as something fun to play in. Not the dangerous stuff it can be. So be careful on slick roads and drive just a little slower and stay back a little more. It is just my nature to be bossy. I can't seem to stop myself. Pl Stuffed Mushrooms 12/08/2009
This is my version of stuffed mushrooms. It is yummy AND easy. The Lad doesn't like mushrooms so I make this just for me. Portabella Mushrooms 1 per person 1/2 lbs of crab salad per 2 caps 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese Break off stems and scrape off gills of mushrooms with a spoon. Mix in 1/2 of cheese and fill caps with salad. Top with rest of cheese. Put caps in baking dish. Add a little water in bottom of dish to help steam the mushrooms. Bake in 400 degree oven for about 15 minutes....just till top is brown. Here you can see that I broke off the stem and scraped off most of the gills with a spoon. You can leave the gills on if you want...I just like most of it to be gone. Then I take this salad... ...and mix in some Parmesan cheese.... It is a little messy but so worth it. Split the salad between the caps and sprinkle a little more cheese on top. Put a little water in the pan... it helps steam the mushrooms...and bake in a hot oven till brown and bubbly about 15-20 minutes in a 400 degree oven. This is what they look like when they are done. I just love these. This recipe is very adaptable. You can use crimini mushrooms...which are baby portabellas...just break out the stem...don't worry about the gills. Then you can fill and cook as usual and serve as appetizers. I made this for my lunch today. What a lucky Gal I am! |
