New Developments 07/18/2011
The VERY bad rodent that is causing my distress is tearing up my garden...still! This is at least in a garden I really don't have planted with new stuff. It is aggravating that my trapping skills didn't result in a corpse. Here...you can see how big my tomatoes are getting. This fence is four foot high, except for the part lying on the ground. So...I would say 3-3 1/2 feet tall. Now I am just waiting for the tomatoes to ripen. Farmer J showed me yesterday that my corn is getting it's first ears. Maybe it will listen now. HA HA HA! My corny humor. HA HA HA! ******************************************************************************* Add Comment More Of The Same, But Different 07/13/2011
On June 30th, I cut this sage plant way back to stimulate new growth. It worked! You can see there is still a little old growth, too. I guess when I was planting this garden, I dropped a few seeds. I was carrying handfuls of packets around as I did it. This is the outside edge of this bed. The fence behind my tomatoes is a four foot fence, with the bottom foot lying on the ground. So...in my guess-timation, these tomatoes are about three foot tall, and change. This is what they looked like when I put them in the ground on May 15th. I planted these in accordance with the Love Apple Farm. I am still trying to decide if I want to pinch back the plants and stake them. A Texan I know doesn't do either one. Last year, he was the only one I knew who had tomatoes. Everyone else, including me, had troubles with those russet tomato mites. They seem to be doing just fine the way they are. Yeah! I also planted basil all over my garden. I topped these out the other day and made some chimi churri sauce. The Lad likes it on his brats. It is sort of like pesto, except no nuts and cheese. I LOVE basil. When you top out the plants, the leaves get bigger, and the plant gets bushier. Cut and come again crop. Now, out to see what the day has to offer. ******************************************************************************* My Garden 06/21/2011
Right in the middle of this photo is my first summer squash. Now all I need is a male bloom that is open when the female bloom is open. THEN...I can make sure I get plenty of squash...by fertilizing it myself. It sure looks like a bunch more blooms are coming. Even though I posted pictures of my garden yesterday, it still looks like it grew a bunch last night. Here are a bunch of tomato blooms. Hoping to be tomatoes. This a beautiful Anaheim Chili. I have several more. See, tons of blooms here, too. I can hardly wait. I just love to garden! ******************************************************************************* What My Garden Looks Like Today 06/12/2011
Around the middle of May I planted these tomatoes. This is a different angle, but the same plants, not quite a month later. As you can see...they have grown! Yeah! This is a photo from today. Last month. I know they are hard to see. Sorry. My squash. Not sure which ones the are any more...just squash. They will let me know later. When I pick them...and eat them. Here is a tomato. My hand is there to show scale. This shows you that there are getting to be quite a few on each plant. I planted two kinds of potatoes here. Russet and Yukon Gold. I am showing an eggplant here. Look at all the blooms. This is purslane. It is to be eaten like spinach. It grows like a weed here. That is why I have a hard time getting myself to stop pulling them up for weeds. This out of focus photo is of an Anahiem chili. It is getting big, too. It also looks like something is eating the leaves. Bugs or beasts? That is the question. ****************************************************************************** Marvelous! 05/25/2011
Today, I went out to water my garden, and I saw dirt cracking all over the place. Here is another spot of cracked dirt. Only this one you can see the sprout if you look inside. Squash, I believe. Zucchini, I hope. You are looking at okra. Farmer J and his family LOVE okra. I know it is okra because of the seed hull on the tallest plant. I am afraid to pick it off. I don't want to damage the leaves. Can't you hear the choir of Angels singing!?! "Ahhhhhh....men!" I LOVE tomatoes...straight...from...the...garden! Beefsteak. Anahiem chili. For Farmer J. Looks like another tomato to me (right in the center). I have to say that today is a very good day. I am so blessed to be able to see the progress of my hard work. And...of the hard work of the people who love me. I can see my 'dream' is growing legs. Will it walk? Will it run? I guess it really doesn't matter, because I am riding this pony to the end, whatever that entails. So I rejoice in the moment. I can see tomato preserves, pickled peppers, ham and beans, pesto, salsa, gumbo, I could go on forever. What I am really looking forward to is enough zucchini to fund my bread needs. In a few weeks, my garden will be looking so much different, but for today...it looks marvelous! ******************************************************************************* |
