On June 30th, I cut this sage plant way back to stimulate new growth.  It worked!  You can see there is still a little old growth, too.
Picture
I guess when I was planting this garden, I dropped a few seeds.  I was carrying handfuls of packets around as I did it.  This is the outside edge of this bed.
Picture
The fence behind my tomatoes is a four foot fence, with the bottom foot lying on the ground.  So...in my guess-timation, these tomatoes are about three foot tall, and change.
Picture
This is what they looked like when I put them in the ground on May 15th.  I planted these in accordance with the Love Apple Farm.

I am still trying to decide if I want to pinch back the plants and stake them.  A Texan I know doesn't do either one.  Last year, he was the only one I knew who had tomatoes.  Everyone else, including me, had troubles with those russet tomato mites.  They seem to be doing just fine the way they are.  Yeah!
I also planted basil all over my garden.
Picture
I topped these out the other day and made some chimi churri sauce.  The Lad likes it on his brats.  It is sort of like pesto, except no nuts and cheese.

I LOVE basil.

When you top out the plants, the leaves get bigger, and the plant gets bushier.  Cut and come again crop.

Now, out to see what the day has to offer.

"Future" eggplant Parmigiana.  I count five eggplant.  Find them.
Picture
This is 'future' tomato something.  Like sauce.  Ketchup.  Juice.
Picture
These are Roma tomatoes.  Future salsa.  These got worm tea a couple of days ago.  Hopefully they will start 'jumpin off', like Farmer J says.
Picture
The basil IS jumpin' off.  I planted it all over the place.  Soon I will be pinching off the tops to encourage the plants to branch out and the leaves to get bigger.  That way I can harvest several times a week and still keep my plants.  Yeah!  I want to show you how to use up cooked chicken or turkey and basil to make a one-pot-dish.  I love it.
Picture
My first zucchini.  It can be picked now.  You don't know how much it kills me to buy zucchini.  I go through so much of it for my zucchini bread.  Or shall I say 'crack bread'.
Picture
Patty pan squash.  Bunches of patty pan.  Sauteed veggies.  Yumm.
Picture
Throw in some herbs.  Parsley and marjoram.  Maybe some thyme or chives would be good, too.
Picture
The Bok Choi is ready to start to cut.  I think some worm tea would do these veggies good, too.
Picture
Picture
Just so you can see some progress...the potatoes.  I need to put up some boards on the sides of this bed and fill it with dirt.  Especially if I want a bunch of potatoes.  Which I do.
Picture
Basil.  Basil.  Basil.  Did I tell you how much I love Basil?  Well, I do.

Picture
This is what my beautiful garden looks like today.  Just about ready to explode.
Picture
I see four eggplants on this one alone.  Enough to make at least two cake pans of eggplant Parmesan.  I have eight more plants.  Yeah!
Picture
Look at the blooms on this one.  It sure is promising!
Picture
Basil is coming up everywhere!  I planned it like that.  Once they get a little taller, I will 'top' them so the leaves get bigger.  Basil is my most favorite herb.  Speaking of herbs...
Picture
As you can see here, my tarragon is out of control.
Picture
This is what it looks like now.  I also whacked down the chives, lemon balm, sage, and thyme.  I had to do this because the tarragon was shading the okra (to the west).  Goat food now.
Picture
This is the Bok Choi.  I think I may plant some more.  Look closely to the left of the photo.  We have a volunteer tomato.  Cherry, I would guess.  We shall find out.
Picture
Here is my Swiss Chard.  The chard comes in different colors, too.  It is what they call a "cut and come again" crop.  There are a few bald spots I plan on filling in.
Picture
My beautiful zucchini.  Aspiring to be zucchini bread.  Yumm!  Sis loved my zucchini bread and my apple pie the best.

Picture
Around the middle of May I planted these tomatoes.
Picture
This is a different angle, but the same plants, not quite a month later.  As you can see...they have grown!  Yeah!
Picture
This is a photo from today.
Picture
Last month.  I know they are hard to see.  Sorry.
Picture
My squash.  Not sure which ones the are any more...just squash.  They will let me know later.  When I pick them...and eat them.
Picture
Here is a tomato.  My hand is there to show scale.
Picture
This shows you that there are getting to be quite a few on each plant.
Picture
I planted two kinds of potatoes here.  Russet and Yukon Gold.
Picture
I am showing an eggplant here.  Look at all the blooms.
Picture
This is purslane.  It is to be eaten like spinach.  It grows like a weed here.  That is why I have a hard time getting myself to stop pulling them up for weeds.
Picture
This out of focus photo is of an Anahiem chili.  It is getting big, too.  It also looks like something is eating the leaves.

Bugs or beasts?  That is the question.

It Begins! 05/10/2011

Picture
Today I started to plant my garden!  I am so happy to get some tomatoes in the dirt!  I had looked for fish heads...but with no luck.  So I bought fish emulsion, which needs to be mixed with water.  THAT...is what is in these two plastic jugs.  You can also see that I have leveled out the bed.
Picture
This white grocery bag has the crushed egg shells I have been saving just to plant the tomatoes.
Picture
I also used this organic fertilizer, two handfuls, and one of the bone meal.  The other organic fertilizer I used was worm compost.  I big handful right in the hole.
Picture
The recipe called for two aspirin per plant, so in they went.
Picture
This is what it looked like afterwords.  They said 2-3 feet apart.

As I was out and about today, I found some whole fish for 99 cents a pound.  So I bought several packs.  When I plant the next batch of tomatoes, they will have fish, not the emulsion.  I might even try to get a few fish close to these planted ones.

I will take pictures and show you how I do this next batch.  I was just in a hurry to get them in the dirt.
